The Umbwe Route is one of the shortest and steepest paths to the summit of Kilimanjaro, making it the most challenging route. Ideal for experienced climbers, this 5-night, 6-day journey offers thrilling ascents through forested trails and rugged landscapes.

About the Umbwe Route

The Umbwe Route is known for its steep and direct ascent, starting from the south. It quickly gains elevation, offering a swift but physically demanding path with spectacular views. Due to the rapid ascent, it's best suited for experienced trekkers with good acclimatization.

Distance: Approximately 53 kilometers (33 miles) round trip.

Duration: Typically completed in 6 days, though a 7-day itinerary is possible for added acclimatization.

Starting Point: Umbwe Gate, located on the southern side of Mount Kilimanjaro.

5 Nights / 6 Days Itinerary

Day 1: Trek from Umbwe Gate through dense rainforest to Umbwe Camp (2,850 meters).

Day 2: Steep climb through heath and moorland to Barranco Camp (3,950 meters).

Day 3: Climb the Barranco Wall and trek to Karanga Camp (4,035 meters) for acclimatization.

Day 4: Continue to Barafu Camp (4,673 meters) in preparation for the summit push.

Day 5: Early morning ascent to Uhuru Peak (5,895 meters), followed by descent to Mweka Camp (3,068 meters).

Day 6: Final descent to Mweka Gate for your certificate and return to Moshi.
